Pedesting Featured in BOMA Building Guide
“What matters to us is that the built environment is not a barrier to access, but rather a place where we can all partake in the city’s bounty,” says Ramji. “To ‘pedest’ is to be equal and be represented in society.”
Exciting 2022 Pedesting Updates
So much has happened in the world of Pedesting since our last blog post, that it is difficult to know where to begin. As was the case for countless businesses, COVID-19 threw a wrench in the works for Pedesting and our progress, at a critical time in our development. Whilst the whole world was affected by the pandemic, its onset had a disproportionate impact on people with disabilities according to Statistics Canada.
The Importance of Building For Everyone
As city-builders, incorporating accessibility into the built environment is one of our topmost priorities, and we know we’re not alone in our hope to see Calgary projects be built with all users in mind.
Pedesting Community Partnerships
Pedesting is more than an app: it is a community of people who see their respective city as a place for everyone to come together and contribute. The Pedesting community is unified by the belief that a society is best served when everyone is represented, when all citizens are accounted for and able to partake.
Scout's Honour
Although I’m not currently experiencing a disability, I’ve been an ‘accessibility scout’ for a loved one with a mobility disability and I believe that Pedesting™ will essentially give everyone their very own scout. What do I mean?
The Pedestrian Problem
Dr. Victoria Fast shares the geographic problem facing all pedestrians. These directions do not consider sidewalks or pedestrian infrastructure. Pedestrian routes are calculated based entirely on the roads. Further, the routes are segmented and missing information that is essential in supporting pedestrian navigation.
The Tread of Mighty Armies
Pedesting™ is one of those ideas that comes along every once in a while that changes the landscape and breaks down barriers. It opens up doors and brings the world into harmony (well, I might be pushing it but I hope you can tell that I am very impressed).
This Got Personal
My expectation isn’t to get there overnight and understanding this is a process that requires buy-in from many different parties and organizations with a reasonable timeline in order to fulfil the vision of a barrier free environment. Pedesting™ is the bridge to that distant vision.
The World Adapted to Us
If Pedesting wasn’t already invented it would have been an outstanding award winning project. It clearly identified a challenge, used cutting edge technology to address it, was adaptable to the individual with the end goal being a person’s genuine satisfaction.
